Objectives
- Discuss the new pain management guidelines for children and adults from the American Dental Association.
- Discuss the mechanism of action of NSAIDs and compare the differences between traditional NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors.
- Discuss the importance dosing on analgesic versus anti-inflammatory effects of NSAIDs.
- Discuss the controversy surrounding NSAIDs and induction of gastropathy and nephropathy.
- Describe the role of analgesic adjunctive agents for patients with dental pain. Dosage and efficacy will be discussed.
- Discuss the role of tramadol, suzetrigine and buprenorphine for dental pain.
- Review the opiate complications in South Carolina and the most recent data on opiate-related deaths.

Dr. Kelly W. Jones
Kelly W. Jones, Pharm.D., is a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where he received both his B.S in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees. He also completed a Pharm. D. Fellowship in Family Medicine from MUSC. After graduation he join the faculty at the McLeod Family Medicine Residency Program in Florence, South Carolina and worked with them for 28 years. In 2016, he broke away from academics to help develop a new independent pharmacy located in Florence simply called THE Pharmacy. In October 2021, Dr. Jones decided he missed his first love, teaching. He decided to rejoin McLeod Family Medicine with the intent to focus and develop the rural residency program in Manning and Cheraw, South Carolina. In 1993, he was awarded Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy and since has renewed that certification three times. Dr. Jones was born in Fountain Inn, South Carolina, married to Lisa and has 6 wonderful children Amanda, West, Carol, Mason, Hamilton, and Jackson. To these he can add 9 grandchildren: Mae, Kellett, Lily, Sammy, Morgan, Henry, George, Andy and Jamie. He currently resides in Hartsville, South Carolina. His hobbies include family and writing music.
