Across the Bridge: Exploring Oral Diseases

This comprehensive course provides an evidence-based update on skin, mucosal, and jaw lesions prevalent in dental patients. Covering a spectrum of conditions, including traumatic lesions, infections, systemic disorders with oral manifestations, and medical conditions necessitating dental treatment modifications, participants will gain a thorough understanding of these clinical scenarios. The course encompasses the identification of relevant conditions through the review of patient medical histories, physical examinations, and radiographic analyses. A primer on management strategies and treatments for common oral and jaw disorders will be presented, offering practical insights for dental practitioners. Participants will receive a detailed handout featuring management algorithms and sample prescriptions for commonly used medicines discussed during the course. Additionally, the curriculum addresses the fundamental aspects of documentation, referral processes, and crafting effective consultation letters.

Ricardo Padilla, DDS

Ricardo Padilla, DDS

Ricardo Padilla, born in Guatemala, earned his B.S. and D.D.S. degrees before completing a 3- year Residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. He then pursued a Postdoctoral Fellowship in ENT, Head and Neck Surgical Pathology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. A full-time faculty member at the UNC School of Dentistry since 2002, he currently is the Kaneda Distinguished Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Serving as the Program Director for the Advanced Dental Education in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology since 2006, his practice includes Clinical Oral Pathology and participation in the UNC Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Biopsy Service. Ricardo teaches students from various disciplines and has contributed to the UNC Faculty Council and national Oral Pathology Organizations. Recognized for his expertise, he holds Diplomate status with The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, the International College of Dentists, and the American College of Dentists. Elected as Director of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology until 2030, Ricardo Padilla continues to make significant contributions to his field.
