South Carolina’s Laws Regarding General Anesthesia and Sedation Permits

Sedation permit holders in South Carolina require dentists to receive 4 hours of continuing education every two years directly related to pharmacology, anesthesia, emergency medicine and sedation. This course is designed to cover these topics extensively. It is designed to be a refresher for the current provider and to provide a summary of required credentials for those interested in incorporating 'sedation dentistry' into their practices. Emphasis will be on case selection, complication management, and strategies to promote safety and efficiency while treating the anxious and fearful patient.

Dr. David M. Hicklin, Jr

Dr David Hicklin attended Furman University and the MUSC College of Dental Medicine. After graduation, he completed a GPR at Palmetto Health Richland (Prisma) where he stayed on after completion as faculty and later program director. During his nearly 20 years at Richland, he developed a love and talent for treating patients from all walks of life and was frequently referred patients for general dentistry needs whose anxiety demanded sedation to facilitate the delivery of the procedures. He daily taught residents the techniques of minimal and moderate sedation or general anesthesia as necessary as a way to deliver high quality patient care to diverse patients. While he recently transitioned to private practice, he continues to make IV moderate conscious sedation a daily part of his practice.
